What are Plantation Shutters?
Now that you know what materials they are made out of, and their key benefits to your property, it’s time to learn what they are, how they operate, and how their name came to be. A plantation shutter is a type of window covering that has wider louvres than other styles of blinds. They can be made in a diverse range of materials. They got their name from the South American cotton plantations where the buildings at the time featured them.
Louvres or slats are a term used to describe the horizontal slats that make up the window shutters, and this wider than average style that plantation shutters are well known for make them an aesthetic choice for modern homes today.
Style of Shutter Openings
Once you know the style of window shutter you would like, it’s time to start designing the right style for your home.
We have a large range of shutters on offer, and all of our plantation shutters are custom made to fit any size window or door. We can even do shaped plantation shutters for arch, circular or hexagonal windows upon request.
The main decision you will face when it comes to selecting a style is whether to have a hinged, bi-fold or sliding shutter. These styles will refer to how your plantation shutter will open and close.
Hinged Plantation Shutters
Hinged shutters are the most popular style, and the majority of what we sell via our website (over 95%). The other styles can be built for you upon request. You are able to have two different styles of hinged shutters, although our website may not show them, you will be supplied with standard hinged shutters by default. You are able to also request a ‘double hinged’ shutter from us, although there are certain size restrictions with this type and they also come at an increased cost at 10% extra. A ‘double hinged’ shutter, is where one panel is attached to the first panel and they are able to be folded back onto themselves. You can also opt for ‘Tier on Tier’ style, where the panels are split at whatever height you choose, or ‘Cafe Style’ shutters where the top half is open and without shutter panels, popular for kitchens.
Bi-Fold Shutters
Bi-fold shutters are installed on tracks, they are similar to double hinged shutters – but they feature a track. Up to 8 panels can be bi-folding off one another and stacking to the side. These are commonly used on doorways or extra wide windows to overcome the size restrictions and limitations of a double hinged shutter.
Sliding Shutters
With sliding shutters, instead of folding outwards into the room like a bifold shutter, will slide on tracks in the same direction as your door or window. You would select this style of shutter to be placed in front of sliding doors or larger slider windows. A common down fall to this type of shutter is the large amount of space they project out into the room, they will be in a ‘box’ projecting from your wall and often have to be placed further past the window so that you are able to pass through.
Plantation Shutters FAQ
Our short answer: Yes.
Plantation shutters definitely suit a range of interior themes, and can be mixed up with pretty much any other type of window covering in your home. We sell nearly all types of window treatments, so don’t hesitate to check them out.
Plantation shutters are often used in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. And for other places like living rooms and bedrooms – softer window treatments are usually used. Keep in mind there is no right or wrong answer here.
It is also possible to mix window coverings on one window. For example, you can certainly recess fit a Plantation Shutter and then dress the window or wall with a Curtain in front. We tend to see this on Bay Windows specifically.
Custom plantation shutters normally take between 8-10 weeks to be manufactured and dispatched from our premises, however with the global shipping COVID situation at the moment this may take slightly longer. Transit time with our freight partners is not included, but is usually about a week.
Yes, we provide a lengthy warranty on all of our products. Our plantation shutters are built to last a life time, It is the same product currently being supplied amongst many other retailers in the country. We are proud to say we have yet to have a warranty claim on our shutter products.
Definitely Yes! The benefits of plantation shutters are well established and include adding value to your property and curb appeal. They’re suitable for wet areas and are child safe with strong thermal and sound insulating properties. It’s also why they’re such a popular and common upgrade to most Australian homes.
Certainly. Window shutters are considered a fixture as opposed to a window furnishing. Plantation shutters have so many benefits: Sound & Thermal insulating properties, child safety as they have no cords, low maintenance and curb appeal. Due to these benefits, adding them to any home will contribute to a higher valuation.
Yes they do, although they are ready made. There are a lot of down falls to using a ready made shutter instead of a custom made shutter like at My Direct Blinds. To read more about the advantages of a custom made shutter over a ready made offering at Bunnings, please stop by our comparison post here.

The cost of plantation shutters depends on many variables, which is why it’s important to compare the same products across different price points. The main points to consider that will affect the price of your shutters are:
- Window Size
- Whether you are opting for a DIY Install or Professional Installation
- Whether you are shopping at a direct supplier such as My Direct Blinds or another retail company, who are often middle men.
- Face fit or Recess Fit, this will change the size of the shutter which will change the cost.
- If you are opting for any ‘extras’ such as double hinged shutters, a shaped or tracked shutter.
- Colour – if you are after a stained shutter this will be at an increased cost, due to the material being used is now timber.
- Opt for PVC Shutters for the most cost effective solution.
My Direct Blinds will beat any quote with a lower price if the product and details of the offering are the same as ours, please check our product page with more details. To see more about this topic in depth check out our shutter cost page linked above.
Our team of experts are here to support you, and we can supply helpful resources and DIY guides to help with the installation process. You can check our how to install page for more details, but it’s a relatively simple process. Some of our customers even arrange for their own installers through other finder/services websites quite easily after delivery.

The term stands for “Do it yourself”. ‘DIY’.
It has essentially been associated with consumers primarily in the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities. It’s where people undertake home improvement and various other small craft and construction projects as both a creative-recreational and cost-saving activity.
In terms of our blinds and plantation shutters, DIY will mean you measure and install the shutters yourself instead of having a company do it for you.
By ‘doing it yourself’, you will save on the costs associated with having someone come into your home to measure for you, and installer costs of approximately $50 per panel (not per window). You will save big, and it’s not hard at all. We’re here to help you every step of the way too.
Our shutters come assembled and are easy to measure and install. You don’t have to be a professional to do it.
We sell fully assembled shutters panels, for ease of use. Just about anyone can DIY with My Direct Blinds. Shutter kits are quite a timely endeavor and will require more skills to assemble and install, with little difference in price.
Plantation shutters are easy to clean with a soft damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. We recommend just dusting them regularly to keep them beautifully maintained.
While many people use this term interchangeably, they are in fact different products. Blinds are attached to the inside of the window recess, or just above it. Plantation shutters are fixed to the window frame itself, with no need for cords or extra fixtures to keep them in place. Traditionally shutters have been more expensive options, but My Direct Blinds offers them at prices that truly beat or even compete with other window treatment options.
We import our shutters directly from the manufacturer, and cut out any middle men wholesalers. To import shutters there needs to be enough sales volume to fill a container on a regular basis, as such – many smaller outfits need to resort to purchasing from a ‘wholesaler’ who has the volume to do this. They place a markup on the shutters, and are a middleman. At My Direct Blinds we bypass this and pass these savings directly on to you.
Secondly, due to being an online website, and DIY – you save further by installing the panels yourself as you do not have to pay for the installer. As we are online and the volume that we do – we are able to lower our margins. Smaller retail outfits will sell much less and in order to make a living, they need to charge a higher price. You are paying for the fact that they sell less of the product. This does not mean you’re receiving a better quality product.
We help guide our customers closely through the measuring and selection process and confirm these several times before sending them away for manufacture via phone calls and/or emails. An order will never go into production if you have selected our totally free ‘Expert Review’ option without us confirming it first with you and running through our thorough checklist. We also review your window photos. With guides and resources and the collaborative support of our team, our customers don’t make mistakes with their online orders. In the unlikely scenario that an error is made My Direct Blinds will do our best to resolve the issue.
The cost of delivery will depend on where you live and the size of your order. A price will be displayed at checkout, please note due to being a very fragile product this figure is not just the freight but the handling, packing and insurance of the goods whilst in transit also. We encourage our customers to compare the overall cost of our shutters with shipping to any of competitors and you will find we come out much cheaper – it is also why we offer a price beat guarantee on our polymer shutters. It is also good to keep in mind that pickups are available from our warehouse in Melbourne if you please, just contact us first.
We deliver our shutters on the mainland Australia wide (Including Tasmania).
Speak to our team about any specifics regarding delivery.
We believe PVC to be the best material for manufacturing shutters with, it is a hard wearing material that won’t experience cracking or fading over time when compared to wooden shutters. They are also suitable for wet areas.
PVC shutters offer a modern look, to suit modern homes and they are un distinguishable from the outside if ordering in a white colour when compared to other materials.
PVC shutters are the most cost effective material.
When compared to other materials such as wood or aluminium shutters, PVC plantation shutters offer large benefits.
Notably:
PVC Shutters offer the highest insulating value when compared to aluminium shutters. Aluminium reflects sunlight and is conductive meaning they will get quite hot to touch in summer, and cold in winter. This will radiate inwards in summer, when compared to PVC which is a thicker material. Aluminium shutters are also much more expensive, and are better suited to outdoor areas.
