Measure from the bottom of the frame to the center point of where you would like the panels to be divided. If you have a recess fit shutter, measure from the top of the opening instead.
These are likely the shutters you will need and they do make up 99% of the shutters that we sell. Perfect for almost any window. They will be manufactured with a four-sided frame, unless specified otherwise. The panels can be fixed into the opening with a Z-frame, L-frame or fixed onto the face/outside of your opening with an L-frame. The panels will generally be hinged open.
This will show as an option on your panel configurations, whenever you see the panel configuration letters LL or RR this will mean that one panel is hinged onto the next hence the name “Double Hinged Shutters”. Another name for this type of configuration is Concertina Shutters. Similar to a bifold shutter, but without any tracking systems. They come at an additional 10% cost. Not to be confused with a similar, but different name of shutter configuration called “Double Hung Shutters”, also known as “Tier-on-Tier Shutters” where vertically the panels are split and can be opened independently.
Instead of having a full height solid panel, you are able to split your panels at a height you specify, where you can open the panels above and below independently to help control the amount of light that is allowed into your room or for aesthetic purposes. These shutters do come at an extra cost of 10%. If pairing with a Double Hinged shutter the total cost would be an additional 20%. (10% + 10%). Note the difference between Double Hinged and Double Hung Shutters.
Other types of shutters include those for Bay & Corner windows, Bifold tracking, sliding track, cafe style, or shaped shutters to fit in portholes such as a circular window, triangle, etc. Raked shutters for triangle and trapezoid windows. Shutters for fitting onto french doors can be done as a regular face fit shutter but may require cutouts around the handles which is at an extra cost. We can do some of these upon request. Plantation Shutters can also be manufactured in Aluminium for outdoor areas.
Note: Bifold track, Sliding track, Raked, Shaped, and Cafe style shutters are a work in progress and will be slowly added to the website in time, they may be available upon manual request. They are not yet available.
A full sided frame is considered standard and helps to provide the shutter with stability, as well as assisting the panels to fit and have them operate properly within the opening. If you’re inside or outside mounting, shutters will generally need to sit inside of a frame, albeit there are some exceptions to this. The frame will be designed to fit the style and size of your window. Once you have mounted your frame, the shutters will hinge inside the frame.
A three-sided shutter frame is mostly used only when it is necessary. It can be used to help clear obstructions such as a window winder at the bottom of your window opening. Another application is to provide higher aesthetics when your opening features a protruding windowsill. As there is no need to have a bottom frame in such instances.
A direct mounted shutter is where the panel is hinged directly into the window opening. This is popular in very small width openings, such as front door side light windows. Ideally, to allow maximum light in with such a small opening, it helps to remove the shutter frames and to direct mount the shutter. A light block will be provided free of charge which can be placed behind the panel to help with any light seepage. The other reason is also for openings that are close to 250mm in width, due to the minimum size a shutter panel can be made, in some cases the panel itself can only fit by direct mounting without the shutter frame itself.
A fixed panel cannot be hinged open and sits freely within a U-Chanel frame. The panel can be taken in and out if needed to clean the area but remains in the U-Channel otherwise. This type of installation method is very popular for wall divider openings often featured in newer homes. A U-Channel installation can still be used in a standard window opening, but we’d recommend a standard full frame hinged shutter in this case as it would be more beneficial since you can simply hinge open the panel to clean the area or open the window.
When fitting your shutter on the outside of the window opening, either along the wall or onto the architrave itself, it will need a Face L-Frame.
If you have selected an Inside fit L-frame along with a beaded side stile finish, the beading will also appear along the L-frame itself, as pictured. Z-frames are unchanged and come standard with a flat bullnose finish. A Face Fit L-frame will have a cover strip that will hide the fixings as pictured and is unchanged whether you have selected a beaded or flat finish.
