Prior to getting started:

Have you planned the fit of your curtains?

Let the excitement begin! If you’ve already pinpointed the ideal fit for your windows, you’re all set. If not, don’t worry—we’ll guide you through the design options below.

Does your area feature cornices?

You can choose to hang curtains on your wall or within ceiling  cornices , depending on your preference.

Are you aware of the surface where your curtains will be fixed?

Our curtains can be fixed to most surfaces, but it’s wise to research beforehand.  Wall studs  and  ceiling battens  are typically the easiest to attach to.

Have you considered motorisation?

Experience luxury every day by installing effortless, motorised curtains in your home. Silent Glide’s custom tracks with premium wired and battery-powered motors are suitable for any sized window. Simply include motorisation in your order to achieve your desired aesthetic.

Wired motors are ideal for new homes or renovations. With assistance from your electrician, you can strategically plan to conceal your motor and wiring. For instance, if you desire double motorised curtains, you can hide the wiring between your tracks.

Please note that motorisation is not available for curtains with multiple openings or free-flow tracks.

Alright, it’s time to kick off the measuring process. Let’s break it down step by step.

Ensure you take your measurements in millimeters (mm).

Select Ceiling or Wall Fit

Step 1: Verify your depth

If your home features a  built in pelmets,  ensure there’s a minimum depth of 250 mm inside to accommodate both curtains.

Our double curtains typically extend from 220 mm to 250 mm out from your wall, but you can tailor this  projection  by customising your curtain styles. Opt for our slimmest designer option, requiring only 220 mm of depth: sheer  S-fold  curtains paired with pencil or inverted  pleats  for your blockouts.

Step 2: Determine Your Width

Measure the precise width of your ceiling from one wall to the other, noting it down. If there are  cornices , measure from the inside edge. This measurement becomes your  track  width.

No need to measure fabric; we’ll handle it based on your track width.

Step 3: Measure your splits, totally optional.

182.-Split-for-ceiling-mount-single-split-17

For multiple openings, you have the option to choose 1 or 2 splits and specify their exact locations. Splitting your curtains is especially beneficial for bi-fold and sliding doors, allowing easy access by moving sections of the curtains.

Indicate the number of splits you prefer. If no split measurements are provided, we’ll evenly space them.

If you prefer not to have any splits, proceed to step 3.

measuring_one_split

For a single custom split, measure the width from the left to the intended split location and record the measurement.

measuring_two_splits

For two custom splits, measure the widths from the left to each split position and record them.

Step 4: Measure the drop

Measure the distance from your ceiling to the floor on the left side, middle, and right side. If there are  cornices , measure from the inside of them. Record the largest measurement among the three. Opt for  puddling  if the difference between your three measurements is greater than 10 mm.

269. Measure drop-33

Step 5: Select your preferred finish.

When designing and ordering your curtains, select from the three options below.

Please provide only the exact measurements, without making any deductions or additions. We will make the necessary adjustments to ensure you receive the perfect finish.

If you opt for curtains  just off the floor they will be approximately 5 – 10 mm shorter than your drop measurement and will hover just above your floor.

If you prefer curtains  touching the floor , they will skim your floor by up to 5 mm.

For  puddling  curtains, they will puddle on your floor by 20 mm. If you desire a larger puddle, please let us know in the comment section during checkout.

Keep in mind the option to combine two distinct finishes, and it’s advisable to document your preference for each curtain. Here’s a top tip: Puddled sheers create a wonderfully relaxed ambiance when paired with blockout curtains that sit slightly above the floor, behind your sheer.

270. Choose the finish-34

Step 6: Select your wand, stacking preference, and track flow.

Make a note of the  wand  size you require. It may seem obvious, but the longer your drop, the larger your wand should be to ensure easy accessibility.

Indicate whether you prefer a  left stack,   right stack,   centre opening,  or multiple openings for your curtains. Consider which side is the most convenient to reach and free from obstructions, as well as which part of your window you anticipate opening frequently. If you opt for motorisation and select center opening curtains, specify the side for your motor placement. Please note that motorisation is not an option for curtains with multiple openings. Rest assured, we will ensure that your motor fits without requiring adjustments to your measurements.

Upon ordering, decide between a  fixed flow  track and a  free flow  track. A free flow track grants you complete flexibility in how you open and stack your curtains. However, please be aware that motorisation is not available for free flow tracks.

Step 7: Finalise Your Custom Curtain Purchase Online

It’s time to seal the deal on your custom curtains! As you make your purchase, you’ll have the chance to select your preferred hem option. No need to factor in any extra measurements for the  hem  – we’ll handle that part for you.

Remember, simply provide us with the exact measurements you’ve taken in millimeters (mm); don’t worry about adjusting for your chosen finish.

Depending on how you’ve measured, we will make a small deduction on your track width if you choose the wall to wall option on the product page so the track will fit in between your walls or cornices. The ideal fit for a ceiling fit curtain is wall to wall.

If you are wanting your curtain to frame your window, we’d recommend wall fitting the curtain. If you are wanting a ceiling fit and to frame your window (not a wall to wall fit), add at least 30% to your window measurement. Ensure no obstructions exist on your wall either side based on your new track width. If measuring in this way, select a standard fit on the product page (not wall to wall), the track will be made to your exact measurement so that it frames your window. Please don’t make any deductions on your side.

Step 1: Determine Your Width

To cover your entire wall with curtains: Begin by measuring the width from one wall to the other, ensuring accuracy. Jot down this measurement as your  track  width.

For curtains framing your window: Measure the width of your window frame or  recess  along the top edge. Add approximately 30% to this measurement to ensure the curtains elegantly frame the window’s perimeter. This revised measurement will be your track width. For example, if your  window frame  width measures 2000 mm, adding 30% (600 mm) brings the total to 2600 mm. After adjusting your wider track measurement, double-check to ensure there are no obstructions in the way.

Rest assured, you needn’t concern yourself with fabric calculations; we’ll manage that based on your track width.

271. Width measuring on wall-35

Step 2: Measure your splits, optionally.

180.-How-to-measure-for-one-custom-split-15

For a single custom split, start by measuring the width from the left side to the designated split point and record this measurement.

If you’re measuring from the outer left edge of your window frame or recess, add your left stack allowance in millimeters to your width. This adjustment ensures that your curtains stack away from the window glass. Record this revised measurement.

181

For two custom splits, measure the widths from the left side to each split position and record these measurements.

If you’re measuring one or both splits from the outer left edge of your window frame or recess, add your left stack allowance in millimeters to one or both widths. This adjustment ensures that your curtains stack away from the window glass. Record these measurements accordingly.

Step 3: Measure your drop

273

Use a pencil to measure and mark where your curtains will commence – indicating the top of your curtain track. Utilise your ceiling or window frame as a reference to ensure a level starting point across the top. Keep in mind, hanging your curtains from  wall studs  is recommended for optimal support.

274.-Face-measure-drop-B-38

To determine the appropriate drop for your curtains, follow these steps:

1. Measure from where the curtain will begin at the top down to the floor on the left side, middle, and right side. Record each measurement.
2. Note that the drop measurement should be from where the top of the track will be mounted to the finished floor.
3. Compare the three measurements and identify the largest one.
4. If the difference between the three measurements is greater than 10 mm, opt for  puddled  style for your curtains.

Step 4: Select your preferred finish.

275. Face choose finish-39

Step 5: Select your wand, stacking preference, and track flow.
